Russellville Ky
Sept 11th 1865

John Ogden, Supt &c.

In answer to "Circular Letter no2" of Sept 1st I have the honor to report

"1st" The last census (1860) shows that this county contained more than 16,000 Negroes and I suppose this town (Russellville) contained not less than 500 The total no. in the County has doubtless been diminished by the Rebellion but the no in town has been increased

"2nd" Should a school be established I think at least from 50 to 100 would attend, probably many more

"3rd" Houses are scarce and in demand in this place. I know of no schoolhouse that was used for colored children though there was a school for free colored children her before the Rebellion.

"4th" The colored people here own and use one excellent church edifice, large and commodious, (formerly the Methodist Church building in this place) that could be used for a school.

"5th" There are no private schools so far as I know.

"6th" Can give no definite answer. The negroes are anxious for schools and would generally pay $0.50 per month per scholar.
