In training, those teachers and friends whose comradeship supported your personality, who did not discourage groping efforts toward your own proper path, have helped most. in my day we studied long years in hot classrooms, drawing from the nude, from the antique, and modeling from both. During summers we were out in the open, painting. Everyone did that. But I put in years inside, illustrating, beginning as a child for children's magazines, and keeping it up as I remained East. That was for supplementing the checks from home for I belonged to a large family of children, all of whom were ambitious. As a result, after the school days were over, there were long periods when my only inspiration and help toward painting came from visits to the galleries; particularly the Metropolitan, the Louvre, Durand Ruel, Montross, The National Gallery, Knoedler and the rest; to seek out Chinese paintings and any Primitives.
