 In art we flourish under restraint well-founded, and the glorious painting that comes out of China is a blossoming from well ordered beds. The art of Ravenna was no wild flower. Giotto observed rules and traditions - he broke many from the past, but made more for himself which he followed rigorously. Knowledge brings freedom when accompanied by understanding. It is first to know, second to understand, third to forget. For in our painting, that which is moving cannot be taught. It grows well in a cultivated soil, and flowers best in the free air.
