There's a soft spot in my heart for women's clubs. The W. clubs idea was born down in Posey County in my own state. Pigrimages. I can remember that the women in our own neighborhood - the mothers of my friends were thinking of nothing apparantly but themselves & their families their neighbors & their families. This did not apply to my own mother who was a new woman, herself an organizer of Clubs; & too busy for gossip; being a Quaker preacher, the wife of a Quaker preacher, the mother of six children & two of three adopted ones & who believed in bringing them up in the country with all the milk & cream & home made bread & butter they could eat, surrounded us with millions flowers & every kind of tree that would grow in that climate. My father & mother were peculiar in their neighborhood. For one thing they loved art & beauty of nature quite apart from its use. That was very peculiar. Men & women in country & town who love these things now & talk about them are not peculiar. That is one thing the Woman's Club has been instrumental in helping to bring about. Exhibitions - travelling exhibits. Study groups. Conditions not ideal yet. My criticism of present manifestation is that it is too much talk. Ready to criticize. Quite meditation. Open mindedness. Analyze every picture you like. Why do I like it? Study aesthetics. Do your reasons for liking a p. stand the highest test? What is the hightest test? Study Clive Bell's "Art". Englishman "Vision & Design" Roger Fry of Met. Museum. Letters of Van Gogh Central library. Books alone never will give it.
