3/8 in. between laths rent (or handmade) laths are best.
By breaking joints of the lathing the tendency of the plaster to crack along the line of joints is diminished. 
Double lath on a wide surface to  preserve a good key.

Colored stucco: 
line stucco. mix with the line various oxides. Forge ashes for blacks & grays.
green enamel for greens, litharge or red lead for red. oxide or carbonate of copper for blues.

S graffito is scratched ornament in plaster.  oldest form of surface decoration.
