July 27, 1943-
Dear Hedda,
No mail this week and being that the only communication with the world around it's quite demoralizing. Still hot, every day seems to be the hottest day I've ever seen. Lost some pounds but I feel allright - keep taking salt tablets I'm very exited now about the news from Italy, we know the news very late, the english newspaper from the city is coming some time with the news from 3 days ago. I'll send you the newspaper, it's printed on a very primitive paper and you hardly can read, very bad printing It's also rather difficult to hear the radio especially now with the monsoon in the areas around.
You must have quite a lot of enormous headlines in the New York papers in these days.
Life here is quite regular and rather quiet - I'm around the whole day in underwear and slippers and our helmet. It's too hot even for wrist watch
