July 12 1944

Dear, this is in the afternoon now it's about 5:30 and I'm hungry, we eat at 6 o'clock and I'm tired of C rations made out mostly of spam and ham and frankfurters I've been eating for months and months. I hope to get back to you dear and have a marvelous dinner of yours. Make me a big huge salad of tomatoes and olives and so on. I'm hungry- [we eating all night here and we have plenty of everything, I'm just tired of regular, monotonous meals. I want to eat with you dressed in a beautiful colored dress with plenty of arms and short sleeves- People in this city are quite funny and they tell all sort of stories. One of them, a guy I knew years ago is very difficult to be found for this reason: during the german occupation and terror some time ago the rumor started that poor garone (that's his name) was taken as hostage and killed. This now is a fat old red faced man, very good natured and always more or less drunk. Everybody was terribly sorry, poor garome, they never paid him any much attention but now everybody was ready to say that he was much a good man and so many other qualities discovered in him.
