Takaezu: We had a garbage can and a hammer and everything went in that was bad. And bad doesn't mean even technically bad, if they had a spark of life or creativity. That was encouraged. So it was individual kind of teaching. Give crit individually. Even now I give crit individually. So the other studens won't have to listen to what you say to one person. And I ask them about how do they grade themselves.

Q: That's a good idea.

Takaezu: Sometimes they overgrade themselves. Sometimes under-grade. I say, "I don't think you performed that well." And they say, "We tried very hard," and sometimes I give in. If they sincerely feel they worked hard at it.

Q: What if they worked hard and it is no good?

Takaezu: Well, the effort they put in. Because you cannot measure people's creative ability. Some already had lessons somewhere. And hadn't. Some are facile with their hands. They can do things very well. That doesn't mean they're creative either. And the ones that make funky stuff, they're trying. The
