Curator's Comments

Planning and putting together Reflections, the Tom Malone exhibition, has been a bitter-sweet experience for me. I am saddened that Tom is not here to see our modest effort to compliment and share something of his work with the larger public. Both Bettye Holte and I had a great deal of pleasure in exploring a portion of his large artistic output. All of his work is characterized by his own artistic vision and integrity and whatever medium he used, his skill as a consummate craftsperson is apparent. All of the work, even that of darker moods, is characterized by a charm and elegance.
It has been a pleasure to work with Ms. Holte and our hope is that viewers will sense something of the very real artistic contribution this gifted young man gave to the cultural history of our community.

Contemporary Intuition
In one of his marvelous lectures, Joseph Campbell said, "the problem of the artist is to relate the contemporary circumstances to the elementary..." (the ideas that underlie our philosophy, religion and mythology). Perhaps without ever realizing it, Tom consistently achieved this in his work
I remember his guitars...and a Volkswagen "beetle" interior he created, as a class assignment in those early years...I'm enriched in that. I am glad I knew him.
