[[strikethrough]] I was to be brought to him. I had in the meantime interested a young Syrian guide in my case by a promise of liberal "tip", and had already supplied him with "backshees" to be distributed where he thought useful. So it happened that my companion and myself were marched between two soldiers through he streets of Jaffa, but the "backshees" had already gotten to work and our soldiers were most attentive to our comfort, the shady side of the street was selected and etc., etc. Arrived at the Consuls we were soon able to convince him that we had some business in the country, and that this business was not to try in any way to make it uncomfortable for the German Emperor. He had a short talk with the Turkish authorities and we were simply released then and there - however to meet the same difficulties the next time our papers were demanded, which happened the next day when we arrived in Jerusalem. Around the railroad station outside of this city had been built a high fence with but one exit.  We were disgusted.  The same difficulty to be again encountered. We had however, the advantage of being in the country and the old Consul on our side. This was a decided advantage over our situation of yesterday. There were a couple of hundred persons who had to have their papers examined and satisfy the three or four officers at the gate. We took out of our pockets those important looking papers which had however failed the day before, and unable to decide upon a course of conduct thought we would let events take care of themselves.
