mirror. I am not concerned with "abstraction" for its own sake, being the kind of painter who is more likely to make a sun from a circle, and a horizon from a straight line, than vice versa.

Now, what about the"significant objects?? Signifying what? These are obscure symbols, not meant to tell a story, or represent an idea or concept; nor are they chosen for their beauty as objects (although I think they are beautiful). The shell, the leaf, the light globe reflected in the dark mirror, are commonplace enough objects; they are intended, by their isolation, and by their enigmatic juxtaposition, to arouse in the spectator, as they do in me, feelings having to do with the mysteries which surround us, the world of wonders with familiar faces.
