Dear Elizabeth:

Just before Christmas I received a disturbing letter from Violet Organ, which frankly I find difficult to understand. She reports that several pages are missing from one of Henri's diaries; that the Henri diaries were marked up with corrected punctuation, spelling, etc., and that in certain places inking out and blue penciling had obliterated his writing, and that the same was true of Linda Heri's diary, in black crayon, which however did not obliterate the writing.

Obviously I cannot imagine that this happened while the diaries were in your care. Your long experience with handling first-source material rules that out. I can only think that these defacements, if such they are, had been made at some earlier time by someone else -- perhaps Henri himself, and Linda? The missing pages are another matter, and I supposed may possibly be mislaid among your other papers.

It seems to me, in my bewilderment and distress, that a letter from you stating as exactly as possible the condition in which the diaries came to you should be at least a start towards clearing up the problem.

As ever,
Tay
