Dear Elizabeth,
I've been thinking a lot about your situation and about the book, and while it doesn't matter to us, very much, when the manuscript comes in - whether this year or next year or even the year after - I do think that Violet Organ has got to be informed frankly of the extreme unlikelihood of publication before Spring 1960. No one puts the slightest weight of blame on your shoulders, my dear. Acts of God can, I assume, be pleasant, but usually you'll note the phrase means something horrid or horrible, and both adjectives apply in this case!

Vi has been keeping very quiet, but I'm afraid it's because the last time I talked with her, I said I believed you were back at work again. Before talking to her, I wanted to tell you that I think she must be told the facts and there is always the possibility I supposed that she will want to make some other arrangement. I don't know off hand what the contractual situation would be, but we can go into all that if it is necessary. Naturally I shall strongly recommend that she sit tight.

Will you call me, or write me, after receiving this letter, so that I can take the next step?

Affectionately always,
Tay
