Dear Mr Macbeth,

I do care that you see my 8 30"x40" oils at Stieglitz', although in your adroit little Art notes I read a condition stating that the newcomers should bother you only on Tuesday-mornings.

I care to hear from you some day, when I call again, how my work impressed you, since I hold that the best of Art is, after all, a [[underline]]service,[[/underline]] therefore subject to criticism and liking, of the beholder or patron -- instead of being a useless expenditure by the artist of his innovating fancy or whim of diving into uncommunicable spheres of analysis and thought (like Picasso and others).

Therefore a new Art movement, however radical, must, after all, [[underline]]serve[[/underline]] existing wants or aspirations of a contemporary public - which only wants to be elucidated.

Now it is in that sense, that I am trying to subject my own impressions of American nature and my own ideas of form and color to general laws of painting as well as to some phase of Public Sentiment. And I have set my mind on accomplishing my task, - which is far easier to do in painting than in building.

I remain yours sincerely,
Oscar Bluemner

Do not return the enclosures, please.
