"My friend, Stephen Bourgeois, has often exhorted me 'to tell about my paintings, what I feel, but not to bore them with my theories'. However, while of America I 'have seen many men's towns and know their minds'-- to use Homer's word's-- I do not mean to state the physical aspects of what I see or as I see it, and I am unable to say what I feel. Or, can you fully explain what you feel and 'carry into nature'? ART is a matter of emotion. Has the painter "something" to say? Is it 'Painting?' There two criterions together with the peculiarities of American life and country make all general controversies about painting, here and all foreign and artificial standards or 'isms' useless. Accordingly I wish to be judged.
