LRB 21. 1865 Augusta, Ga. Decr. 3d, 1865 B.174 DG 1865 [[stamp]] THE NATIONAL ARCHIVES OF THE UNITED STATES [[/stamp]] Bezzo, John Pvc Co. "C" 1st Bat. U.S. Inft. In compliance with orders from Gen. Tillson, A.A. Comr. Bureau R.F.& A.L. dated Augusta, Nov'r 27, 1865, & approved by Maj. Gen. Steadman, proceeded to visit Post Offices at Atlanta, Macon & Milledgeville, to find & take to Gen. Tillson certain missing documents directed to him - failed to find them at any of the above named offices - called on Gov. Johnson and was informed that he had sent them by a faithful courier to the Adjt. Gen'l at Macon to be forwarded from that office through the usual channel at Milledgeville, Lt. Holsted read to me a Telegram rec'd by him from the Adjt. General at Macon, stating that said papers had not been rec'd at his office - The courier declared to Lt. Holsted that he presented them to the Adjt. Gen'l with Gov. Johnson's request that they should be forwarded, and that the Adjt. Gen'l in an indifferent manner said, "all right, chuck them into that box there" - meaning the Mail box - The clerk in the Adjt Genls' office at Macon told me that the papers were put in the Mail box - that he identified them by their being sealed in two different envelopes & tied around with red tape &c., but did not know who took the papers from the box this time. The two Mail Agents on the Macon & Atlanta Mail route knew nothing of the papers - On the date of sending the documents, one of the Mail agents was sick & some other person was on duty in his place - Could not ascertain who this person was. (one enclosure) Rec'd S.A.A.C. Dec 3d 1865 Bureau R.F. and A.L. Office Act'g Ass't Com'r State of Ga. Augusta, Ga. Decr 7, 1865. Respectfully forwarded to the Maj. Gen. Comd'g Dep. of Ga. Not only the papers within referred to but several others sent at different times through the same channel by the Provisional Gov't have been lost. There is evidently some neglect of duty or carelessness on the part of the Asst. Adjt. Gen'l at Macon or on the part of the Couriers. Davis Tillson Brig. Gen. Vols & A.A. Com'r E & M. 44.
