All the parties reside near Goshen Meeting House 15 m west of Dalonega Dawson County Ga. A.J. Sprigs Esq. was present, and is I believe thoroughly conversant with the whole matter. Permit me respectfully and entirely disinterestedly to suggest the name of Daniel Fowler Judge of Ordinary Dawsonville Dawson County Ga. as in every respect a suitable person for Agt. Freedmen's Bureau. JGB Dalton Ga Mch 10"/ 66 B.27 O.A.C. 16, 1866. Brown, Jas. G. 1866 [[stamp]] THE NATIONAL ARCHIVES OF THE UNITED STATES [[/stamp]] States that a man named Mr. Martin forcibly took & drove off a cow belonging to a freedman named Allen. The freedman obtained a warrant & brought said Martin up for trial, but on a motion made by Counsel for defendant the case was dismissed on the grounds that a negro was not entitled to take oath against a white man & the freedman Allen was made pay all costs. Upon application of Brown, the Justice of the peace refused to reconsider the case, The Warrant was endorsed, "Warrant dismissed on the grounds that Allen being a person color can not bring such a proceeding against Martin, at cost of Allen. This statement is made at the suggestion of the people of Dawson Co." Papers enclosed certify to the foregoing facts. Suggest the name of Daniel Fowler for Agent of the County.
