then her husband has returned & is now engaged in securing his portion of the crop & as she stated they had always been well treated & their Employer had never refused to pay them & as she appeared satisfied that he (the Employer) intended to fulfill the terms of his Contract & as her husband had not been molested since his return I did not prosecute my investigation in this matter any farther.

I found that the statement of Mr Caldwell that the agent at La Grange (Blunt C Ferrell Esq) "Was a for slavery man & Secessionist "I looked after the interests of the white & not of the freed people" was not sustained by the white or freed people of that place nor by the parties to whom he referred me. namely: Frederick Ball Esq Postmaster & Mr Hodges Internal Rev collector both of whom stated they considered Mr Ferrell a good Church man. just & impartial in all his dealing with white & black, & one whom they considered peculiarly well qualified for his position on account of his honesty of purpose & upright fairness in all his decisions and during a conversation I had with several prominent citizens of La Grange, Judge Bigham (late Judge of the Superior Court of Troop Co) stated the citizens were well pleased with the Bureau, its workings & its agent in their County & they deemed it almost impossible to get along without it - 

Having investigated the different complaints stated in the Revd Mr Caldwells communication & having heard that some of these outrages had heretofore been reported to Major John Leonard A.S.A Commissr at Atlanta [[strikethrough]] & that [[/strikethrough]]
