Office Chief C.S. D.G. Augusta. Ga. Dec 5th 1865. Respectfully returned. On or about the 20th ult I received a written communication from Asst Surg De Hamme [[Hanne]] complaining both of the quality and quantity of the Beef furnished the Freedmens Hospital by Mess. Marshall & Davis, Beef Contractors. I at once directed the contractors to send all the beef furnished that Hospital to the Commissary that the quality and quantity might come under my personal supervision. This was done for several days, and was discontinued without my authority. I this morning invited Surg De Hamme [[Hanne]] and Mr Marshall to meet me at my office for the purpose of fully investigating the whole matter, but after consulting together, they agreed that no further investigation was necessary. I told them that in future, I would make the issues of Beef to the Freedmens Hospital myself, with which they were well satisfied. The matter rests here at present, but is open to further investigation, if the interests of the service should seem to require it. James McDonald Capt. C.C.S. D.G Respectfully forwarded to Genl Tillson and ref Encl of Chf. C.S. Rec'd back OAAC Dec 8. 1865
