In reference to the enclosed papers, -charging me with being implicated in sending freedmen into Alabama - I have the honor to state that the accusation against me is a false and base invention, gotten up to extricate the Marshal, Mr. T Grier out of the difficulty into which his folly has brought him, I never gave my consent to officers from Ala, in arresting and taking over freedmen from this State, although several times, applications were made by the Sheriff of Russell Co. Ala and other persons to me for that purpose, but I opposed it in every instance. - In one case I reported all the facts I learned to His Excellency Governor Jenkins, in a letter dated April 25th 1866, I suspected the police to be implicated, but not being able to get proper
