Against that I have nothing else to say than that the man perjured himself. - In order to show how much credit can be given to Mayor Wilkin's statement I beg to enclose an "Extract" of a letter written to me Aug 6th and in which he refers to the same subject. It contradicts the statement he made to his Excellency Governor C. J. Jenkins, for in this he says, "There has been only one case of the class referred to, wherein the Marshall or any of the City Officers has been connected &c - and says at the end of this remark in regard to this one case (the one Capt Walbridge reported) the Marshal not carrying the man out of the state but delivered him over to the Alabama Office in the State of Ga. - This letter is also contradicted by the affidavit of W. R. Leger, the Bailiff who states that, "Mr Grier the Marshal arrested the boy and delivered him to me on the bridge in the State of Alabama" Either one or the other must be false
