Major

I have the honor to call your attention, to the complaint of Patience Thompson freedwoman who states that she was abused by a Mr. Thomas Gross of Screven County; her statement is, that she refused to sell him some soap, he then used abusive language to her, and because she replied in language similar, he beat her. She was advised by Mr. Daniel Roberts agent of the Bureau in that Co. to prosecute the case. She with her witnesses went before the grand jury on Monday last, was told by them, that they could do nothing for her, that if a bill was found against Mr. Gross, they would be obliged to do so for every negro who choose to come before them. She also stated that the jury told her to pay the cost and make up with Mr. Gross, which she refused to do, and has applied to me.

Transcription Notes:
Geop doesn't seem like it could be a name, but it sure looks like it the three times it appears in the letter. (Its 'Gross', not Geop)
