he had six sons in the Confederate Army with divers & Union personal friends many of whom were forced into the army by conscription - & with them he did fully sympathize & thinks it probably that with his sympathies for these men he may have sympathies comtemplated by the oath required & would therefore ask that the appointment may be made with the knowledge of striking out the words "Sympathising, &c."
