Georgia Spalding County Personally appeared before me James C. Briggs who deposes and says, that he was a partner of J C Swayze in getting freedpeople to go west - that about four or five weeks since, a company of freedpeople had been collected at Griffin and that he deponent wanted to send them west, but they refused to go without Swayze went with them. Deponent further states upon Swayzes returning to Griffin (having been absent in Thomaston Upson Co Ga) they the (freedpeople) went with Swayze to the west. The reason the freedpeople would not go with deponent was as stated by them that Swayze had promised to see them (the freedpeople) located and in good homes. Deponent further states said Swayze did not see them located but turned them over to another man at Dalton Ga James C Briggs Subscribed & sworn to before me at Griffin Geo Dec 5th 1866 Jas S Boynton Judge Spalding County Court
