The Rev. C. M. Caldwell, A peaceable, loyal Citizen of this place, Has a Colored Church here. I was out with him at his church at night. And while he was conducting his Services, one of these rebels fired a pistol at the window, As I thought to scare us. But we have since learned that it was fired at him to kill him but it took no effect. And his life is threatened almost daily. And I have no doubt that if they can get him alone in the darke they are determined on taking his life.

And there is no man that can bring naught against him only he is preaching to the Colored people. And is a Union man or, as they are pleased to call him Yankee - Col. Before closing this note, I do not wish to weary your patience But I want to call your attention to one of the Professors of the Male School in this place whose Scholars when passing the public highway to & from School behave themselves very meticulously in presents [[presence]] of The Rev. C. M. Caldwell's House and family. Some of them are groomed young men. They certainly behave themselves shamefully. The professor has been informed of the facts, and asked kindly to advise his Schoolars [[Scholars]] to stop [[strikethrough]] indecipherable [[/strikethrough]] such disgraceful conduct. But what Sir, do you suppose was his reply. Caldwell, what was not of his Sort. And the Same thing is still going on and the conduct of those young men disgraceful to humanity.
