Met Museum Picks Hess
By GRACE GLUECK

Thomas B. Hess, the writer, editor and art critic for New York magazine, has been named consultative chairman of the department of 20th-century art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. He succeeds Henry Geldzahler, who recently resigned as curator of the department to become Commissioner of Cultural Affairs of New York City.

In his new position, effective immediately, Mr. Hess will be involved in recommending acquisitions, evolving plans for future exhibitions and for publications on the department's collections. He will also be concerned with fostering relationships between the museum and collectors in the field, as well as encouraging intra-museum cooperation within the city.

Hr. Hess will give up his regular job as art critic for New York magazine, but will continue to write, he said yesterday. His title of consultative chairman is reserved for department heads who engage in, outside activities, such as teaching or writing, in addition to their work at the Metropolitan. His first task will be to "do a complete survey" of the museum's 20th-century holdings, he said.

The new chairman, a graduate of Yale University, was managing editor, then editor of the magazine Art News, devoted to major currents in modern art. From 1967 to 1972, he was New York correspondent for Le Monde of Paris, covering the art world. He has arranged a number of exhibitions, both here and abroad, including retrospectives of the work of Willem de Kooning and Barnett Newman, and has written several books on artists and art movements.

The museum's department of 20th-century art from 1900 to the present, in with art from 1900 to the present, including the decorative arts. Among its exhibitions have been several devoted to the important 20th-century figures, such as the English painter Francis Bacon.
