Art As I See It

Vacationing At Cape Ann Is Delightful For Artists

By MARION E. COUGHLIN
People painting and sketching all over the place! That's what it was like at Cape Ann this summer.
Others were wandering along enjoying the little shops and historic places everywhere. Cape Ann, less known to tourists than Cape Cod and the Berkshires, offers scenic and historic treasures and natural beauty all its own - a real artist's delight, located in Massachusetts about 35 miles north of Boston. It is a peninsula jutting out into the Atlantic where fishermen and lobster-men may be seen at Gloucester where a statue of a ship's captain in foul-weather gear stands along the causway leading into central Gloucester.
An artists' colony is located at Rocky Neck and attracts visitors to its shops and galleries, as well as its restaurants. A drive around Bass Rock Road offers a breathtaking view of rocks and sea where many painters climb out onto the rocks to paint and admire the view.
In nearby Rockport, a unique area known as Bear's Neck attracts hundreds of people daily to its tiny shops, boutiques, eating places and galleries. Specialty shops are wedged in next to one another, and in the harbor is located an old looking warehouse called Motif 1, so named because it has been photographed and painted by si many viewers as a symbol of the New England coast.
An evening in the studio of artist Nell Blaine proved to be one of the most satisfying events of this particular trip. She has a beautiful view of the harbor from her second floor studio which looks down on the the trees and garden below.
The Pizzaro exhibit was still the main attraction at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, and added to that was the new west wing of the museum designed by architect I.M. Pei, who did the east wind of the National Museum in Washington, D.C. This new section displayed "the Great Bronze Age of China: An Exhibition from the People's Republic of China," which will continue through Sept. 27.
Three restaurants offer a variety of menus in the new wing, and the spacious dining room of the Fine Arts Restaurant left nothing to be desired, both in excellence of food and a view of paintings decorative arts and atmosphere.
