appeared & after it had passed, Scott tried to bolt. The coachman told me to take hold & then he got a new grip. We stopped the beast, but if we had had the old straight bit on that we had the time the breeching scared him, he'd have gotten away. This new bit is straight inside, but outside has two pieces of steel (not sharp in any way) which press into the horses cheek when either rein is jerked & it has a mighty good effect. After the attempted rear, Mr. Scott was driven about 18 miles, most of it at a trot. And even at the last, when I thought he would have had some excuse to feel a little tired, he watched every stump & pebble & was just pining for another excuse to bolt. He has since had the horrible old blinders on.

With much love & too much haste to make corrections,

G.C.
