Dear Keith.

I can only think of painting things objects occasionally (when they show a tendency to rust.) That paint I use is mixed Japan dryer, and is not very solid. 

Of course while you're away you could wrap the thing up in waterproof paper (black, tarred stuff with strings around it - Fornet had some.)

You can wrap the water colors up too, unless you're renting the house with them on the wall.

- You might take them out ,and put the glass in front and a sheet of aluminum behind and scotch-tape the edge, and then put them back in the frames.  However if some moisture did get in, it could never get out again.
