EIGHT TONS of Sheets and Pillow Cases

Lausanne Museum

A Titan's linen closet or a laundry woman's nightmare? AFF cover artist Sheila Hicks (#108) acquired eight tons of clean laundry from the Lausanne Hospital, loaned by the Sion Army Barracks, and piled everything up neatly for an original-and mammoth- textile "construction." The laundry, loaned for the summer, and brought in on four trucks, is on exhibit at the Musée Cantonal des Beaux-Arts in Lausanne, which is featuring the Eighth Biennial International Tapestry Exhibition. Also on exhibit is the work of another AFF cover artist, Daniel Graffin (#109) who created three "gonflables" (15 foot high rubber tubes used for temporary bridges) wrapped with cotton indigo textiles—yet another example of how textiles lend themselves to the ingenuity of the artist.
