The nature, object and purposes of the institution to be founded, endowed and maintained are as follows:
To maintain a public art gallery and exhibition rooms for the purpose of presenting examples of the fine arts created by American artists, on the premises of which a lease is hereby granted, and upon such premises as the Trustees may hereafter select in addition thereto or in lieu thereof, for the use and benefit, free of expense to them, of all persons whomsoever, subject only to suitable rules and regulations; to preserve, protect, and put on public view, the paintings, drawings, and sculpture hereby acquired and hereafter to be acquired; to sell, exchange, and dispose of the same, and to acquire new works of art by American artists, from time to time as the Trustees may see fit; to render the said works of art available, under suitable regulations and restrictions, to artists, scholars,
