George Peabody Esqr
My Dear Sir - -
Yours of the 17th inst came with one from Mr Robb, and another from my friend Kellogg -- You ask what was the date of my letter to Mr Robb requesting him to revisit the £300 due on his statue of the Slave?--It was dated 22d Oct as you will perceive by the enclosed copy of his reply, and it has been replied to by Mr Robb without any allusion to my request! His letter is insolent and threatening and I am told through another source that he has declared his intention to sue out an injunction prohibiting the exhibition of the Slave after the 1st of March next!!

You can hardly imagine the astonishment with which I read this letter, and Mr Kelloggs remarks upon Mr Robbs conduct -- Mr R. has not the slightest claim upon the statue now in the hands of Mr K - -I bound myself to execute a duplicate of the statue of the Slave for Mr Robb within two years and he accepted my terms but in doing so -- by letter of Decr 3d 1845, he used the words "duplicate of your Eve" for duplicate of your Slave. This mistake as it proved to be, caused a delay until I could hear from him again which was not until the following May by his letter of April 24th 1846 -- This of course became the starting point and in my letter of the 22d Oct last I announced to him the fact, that the statue would be finished before I could hear from him in reply -- or words to the above effect -- Thus my contract with him has been fulfilled within the time agreed upon - the Statue is being now encased for delivery as It has not a spot or blemish upon it -- indeed I have never seen a finer marble, whereas, the one in America has a streak of a bluish color -- extending from one shoulder down the body behind to the left hip -- Thus you
