Butler Geo. 14th Dec'r 1866

Capt. Eugene Pickett
A.A.G.

Captain:
I have the honor to acknowledge the reception the reception [[strikethrough]] on yesterday of [[/strikethrough]] your favor of 12th inst: In reply I would recommend the name of Mr. Oliver Turssell as Agent for the County of Marion - He is a resident of that County and personally known to myself - He is as true and loyal a man as I know of and I am satisfied that he will to the extent of his capability (which is very good), faithfully discharge the duties of Agent, fearlessly and independently do what he believes to be justice, regardless of color and the prejudices of section - He has up to this time borne the character, and has ever been a peaceable and law abiding citizen - If appointed, I think he will give satisfaction - If you conclude to appoint him, you can enclose his appointment to me or direct to him at my Post Office (Butler) and in my care, as I can convey it to him by private conveyance sooner than he will get it by mail, his P.O. being some distance from the R.R.
In regard to the recommendation of an Agt. for Talbot, I shall at present name no one - I have written to a friend of mine in that county who is a staunch Union man, a lawyer of good standing and in every way fitted to fill the Office to the satisfaction of the Bureau and of [[strikethrough]] Genl. Tillson - [[/strikethrough]] the County. If he will accept, I prefer recommending him - if he will not I shall endeavor to find some other suitable person.

I have the honor to be Captain
Very Respectfully
Your Obdt. Serv't
James J. Harmon Agt.
