I have the honor to submit the following report of my investigation- in case of Mr. Pierce Butler and freedmen - made in compliance with Par. U-S.O. No. 23 - dated Bureau R.F.& AL. Office Ass't. Com'r. State of Georgia. Savannah Ga. Febr'y 28th 1867:-
It appears that one Temple- (freedman)- after laboring for more than a month upon the plantation of Mr. Pierce Butler (near Darien McIntosh Co. Geo.) under a verbal contract-for a portion of the crops and after having received- in consideration of said verbal contract- an advance of rations and clothing- left the plantation of Mr. Butler- without cause, other than a desire to labor for wages and entered into a written contract with one Mr. Cooper,- which contract was approved by Mr. Pease- Agent of the Bureau at Darien Geo. Deeming it injudicious to encourage or tolerate such instability - I directed Mr. Pease to annul the contract with
