I mentioned the negroes, I meant white people alone. But I cannot- I will not- stand by, and see our poor negroes rushing to destruction, without an effort to save them.

In all the appeals that are made for help I see nothing said for the helpless negroes; did our Northern benefactors design their alms for none but white people? I can not possibly think so.

Will you send me 500 bushels of that corn that I may distribute it as I please, to black or white? I shall have no objection at all if you will send up an orderly sergeant with it, to stay with me till I have distributed it, that he may report to you just how I did it. But I do object against that miserable [[?]] that will prevail in the distribution, if our County Justices are to be first called on to talk over the destitution; and then to appoint distributors; and then to scan critically the applicants, &c &c. while the wretches are starving. I wish to lift at once, the heavy load form these poor despairing hearts, and set them to work hopefully. Will you kindly answer me at once? Very respectfully, &c &c.
I refer you to L.N. Falligent merchant
