Dear Mr Dove:
 
I wish that it were possible for me to visit your exhibition but for two or there reasons it seems to be out of the question. In the first place I cannot leave Washington as I am deep in engagements which keep me here and I am distinctly behind in my work because of a recent illness. Then too, as you probably know, Mr Steiglitz and I had a serious misunderstanding last year and he treated me in a way which I cannot easily forgive. It would be impossible for me to visit his Intimate Gallery with-out stirring up something that is past history and which I do not wish to keep actively in mind. Perhaps in time he will feel like telling me how sorry he is and if
