Dear Miss Chapin:

Under the Charter of the City, The Fine Arts Federation of New York is required to present for consideration by the Mayor a slate of candidates for membership in the Art Commission of New York. The Federation is called up on to submit not less than three names for each vacancy. The submissions are voted on by delegates from the sixteen art societies, which compose the Federation, at its Semi-Annual meeting, this year on November 28th. Designees are selected by Standing Committee on Nominations to Art Commissions.

It is my pleasant privilege to inform you of the unanimous invitation of the above Committee to permit us to include your name among those submitted to Mayor Impellitteri.

The Art Commission is, as I need not say to you, a distinguished body, consisting of an architect, a painter, a sculptor, city and museum officials, and includes as well a group of layman who are deeply interested in the welfare of the city and in the appearance of structures and other works of art placed on City property. The duties of commissioners are not onerous, and the work is fascinating. Meetings occur only once a month, and that for only ten months. They are usually placed in the afternoon and are quite short.

We would feel highly honored to endorse your designation to the Mayor as a sculptor member of the Art Commission. We earnestly hope that you will give this invitation favorable attention, and would greatly appreciate your early response, since a slate must be ready by November 14th.

Sincerely yours,
Richard F. Bach
