CORNELIA VAN A. CHAPIN, SCULPTOR

CORNELIA VAN A. CHAPIN, is an American sculptor, whose roots go deep into the early history of our country. Her mother's family was among those worthies who settled Nieuw Amsterdam (New York) and the Hudson River valley. Her seventh great grandfather, on her father's side, was that austere Puritan father, Deacon Samuel Chapin, who strides forward with staff, wide-flowing cape and Bible in Augustus St. Gauden's fine commemorative statue to this co-founder of Springfield, Massachusetts; orginially a commission from her great grandfather, this piece was later slightly changed by St. Gaudens to become "The Puritan," and so has become widely known.
