NEW YORK CITY, N.Y. VILLAGER
MAY 18 1939
Village Scenes At Pen and Brush

Washington Square, Fifteenth St., tug boats near Barrow St., Bleecker St., and Greenwich Village rooftops are included in an exhibition entitled "New York City in Paint," now on View at the Pen and Brush, 16 E. 10th St. Of all the village scenes those in and around Washington Sq. have drawn the greatest number of artists for this exhibition. Miss Zula Barcons has portrayed an artist leaving the Outdoor Art show with several canvases under his arm and others still hanging in the background. This is named "At Washington Square Show." "Washington Square" is the title of one of Mrs. Marguerite Y. Larned's canvases, a view of the arch from the south side of the square. Miss Emily Nichols Hatch, whose studio is on Washington Sq. S., has executed a painting of the square at Easter and also one entitled "Washington Celebration." Miss Hildegarde Hamilton has forsaken her attractive Bermuda Canvases for this exhibit and has hung a picture of "Tugboats Near Barrow St." Other village scenes include that of Miss Gertrude Nason, named "'Inching' Along Bleecker St.," a picture of a blind man singing his way up the street; and that of Miss Katherine A. Lovell of the rooftops as seen from Fifteenth St. Several other canvases, for example that of Miss Anna G. Morse called "Old New York," might well be paintings of the Village although exact identification is difficult.
The Village artists who are showing their work are Miss Anna Duer Irving, Mrs. Marguerite Y Larned, Miss Emily Nichols Hatch, Miss Gertrude Nason. Sculpture by Gordon Steiner, Miss Madeleine Park and Miss Cornelia Van A. Chapin is also on exhibition.
This showing which includes work in oil, water color and black and white will continue through May 31.
