Gilbert for which I took the Note I secured. The Sheriff of Quitman Co. James M. Oliver sold the Land (202 1/2 Acres) 1st Tues. in Jan. last (for 5. Dollars) which was to recover my Money $, contrary to your certain Military Order No. [[blank]] which staid all Levies. Is not this Malpractice! I got here 80 Miles off, from the heat of the Rebs. as I thought - and by Teaching intended to get a livelihood. I've bought a piece of Land giving my Note. I got a bond for title - but I have not complied with the Bond for I can get no pay for Property or service. My Cabin built here in the woods is likely to be a lost with the Land for noncompliance. I sold my Horse for Provision & it is consumed. I threatened with trying the Military to procure the remainder for my Residence Due Nov. last. but was told if did they wold keep me out of the Money as long as they could - I've waited on them three or four times afoot 30 Miles distant- & time after time on these owing for Tuition. I've witness'd their buying property to large amounts & paying the Money but I am a Yankee. Dear Sir, Every Farmer raises his bread & Meat. But I am dependant, and destitute as with further show by Certificate - And ask'd for present Sustenance, or Trial by Bureau, as I know Yankee Justice is equitable, civily or Military, and will not connive with any in this extremity. Such being my case your humble petitioner asks these means of sustenance at your Requisition promtly [[promptly?]] either Military, or civil of those in Authority, and will ever pray - respectfully submitting the same to your virtue-
Ever remaining-
Dear Sir:
Your most obedient & very
humble servant-
A.S. Fellows.
