Madison Ga Decr 2nd 1865
W Major Gray - of the Freedmens Bureau Augusta Ga

Dear Sir
I am here to day for the purpose of answering to a charge (as I learn) since I came here from the citizens, that a negro woman (to wit Minny) had reported to you at this place that myself & son had casually whipped her without cause. I was absent from home last evening when three soldiers came to my home to see me so they said to report him. I came home soon after they left having the fact that they had bin there I sent after them telling them that I was at home and to come back and they could see me and [[?]] they did not come back however and I took the earliest opportunity to see you on the subject but when I arrived here found you gone The negro woman Minny made an assault upon my wife while nigh pushing her down which I saw I ran to them she Minny made several attempts to throw me down
