Sir I have the honor of making a few brief remarks to you in relation to my proceedings and difaculties here,  I have two very fine schools which have been taught by detailed soldiers and have been progressing finely, until the last four days one of the soldiers reported to me that the Chaplain of the 151st Ills. had told him to charge the negroes for teaching and divide the money with him to pay his house rent. I seen the Chaplain and told him I did not allow any charge made on there people for they was too poore to pay anything. I also told him to stay away from the schools that I thought he was an injury to the schools, and also I thought he was exerting a bad influance amongst the Colored people of this place. For a few days after, Dr Tuggle and myself was passing in hearing of one of the school houses we heard a laughing and a hollorring we drove up to the house and there we found this same Chaplain in the house ordering the children to laugh and hollor I asked him if I had not told him to stay away from the schools that I did not want them taught such nonsence as he was teaching them  I told him I wanted the children to be taught to be orderly that the school might be a credit to the country. he said he didnt care what I wanted he would do as he pleased and I couldnt help myself. and then he commenced all kinds of personel abuse I then got out of the buggy and slapped his jaws that was wrong but I did it and
