Genl -

Sir

I wish to know what I am to do with this plantation that I reported to you some time ago, that was rented by Genl. Howard. I have got back the four stolen mules and they are now on the place starving. I went out to the plantation, a few days ago and bought a few bushels of corn to keep the mules from starving till I could hear from you. If you will give me orders I can put a man on the place that will put up the fences and prepare to plant. There are now on the placen ninety Negroes (Refugees) all but thirty of them wish to return to Virginia from whence they came. I promised them I would try & get transportation Can you furnish it to Virginia - there is no white man on the place. Something must be done soon or the negroes & mules will starve.

Respectfully
Your Obt Servant
P. Slaughter
