Rec'd back with report and copy made and referred to Dr. Newman May 5th 69. E.Bp 399 Vol 5. Original file. | Washington  April 1869. Refers letter from D.W. Hammond who states that Col. Lewis refused to aid them in erecting a suitable school building in Atlanta. States that he positively refused to give one cent of money to Methodists Freedmen's His Society for that purpose and says the Methodists can work in any part of the state, but Atlanta. States that the A.M.A. is sectarian to the Congregationalist and Episcopalians represented; hence the opposition |

The appointments of these clerks having been reached to date May 30th '69 it is expected that his a/cs will be ready before that time. | Raleigh  April 19th 1869. Asks permission to retain one of his clerks beyond the 30th inst and until he gets his official accounts made out, &c. |

Forward letter of Andrew Coats, Claim Agent, stating that Dr. James Hughes has applied for ground rent for premises occupied by Aunt Charlotte cold. Hughes states that rent has been paid up to Dec 31st 1869. Probably by Col. Moore, but that he (Coats) know nothing about it. For instructions in this case, there being no record of authority having been granted. |

Acknowledges receipt of telegram of 3d inst. and states that he hopes to close the business of his office in two or three days. Requests authority to Nashville via Washington, D.C. |
