Reports that the lands upon which the freedmen have been located known as Peter Evans Track or Trent River Settlement was recently sold at auction and that the purchaser now talks of disposing of the whole or a part of it. Asks that the Commr exert his influence with Congress and have the Govt to purchase this land and sell it to freedmen with deferred payments. |

States that while stationed at Lovingston. Nelson Co. Va. in 1867 he purchased a place on the outskirts of that town which was sold by decree of the court, for $280. in gold, for which his note was taken for 1.2. & 3. years &c. Remitted to Capt Lacy $100. to pay note maturing in 1868. and notified the Sheriff of Nelson Co. to present the note to him; Learns that the note has not been paid . Requests the Comr to ascertain why the note was not presented. Thinks they want to protest it so that they may dispossess him and thus breakup the school held on the premises &c &c. |

Requests authority to appropriate an amount not exceeding $200. to aid schools now opened or in prospect under auspices of the American Advent Mission Society in East St. Louis. and other points near that city, for benefit of freedmen for whose education no provision whatsoever is made. |
