New York City.

Dear Bob:

Thank you very much for your letter of November 11th. The exhibition, of course, is already organized and hanging in the galleries. I am sending you a copy of the very modest catalogue. We finally merely got a few things from other museums and private collectors and then allowed Durand-Ruel to shoot the works, which they did very generously. I would like to have made it a little less an exhibition of one dealer, which is the real reason that I asked you to help out.

As far as acquiring things here is concerned, I don't know whether you realize what the situation is. We have high hopes, but little cash. The Monet was purchased through the Munger Fund, which is administrated by a separate Board of Trustees and although I assisted them in choosing the particular picture, the donor of the fund expressed a strong wish to have a Monet in the first place. We are at a critical point in the development of the Museum at present and are trying very hard to work out proper means of securing regular operating funds. This means that we will probably be severely limited in acquisition funds for several years, but eventually I feel very certain that we will begin gradually buying things. Of course, a part of the problem is educational and until we manage to show the people in the neighborhood really good things and wean them away from some of the racketeers who have made this their stomping grounds, we will also have difficulty in getting first rate things.

I am going to try and get to New York sometime during the winter but this business of sort of a three-ring circus with only one person conducting it, keeps me from getting away as much as I would like. You may be sure that if we find any way of adding to our collections that I will give what you have to offer every consideration.

With best wishes,
Sincerely your,
