Mr. Germain Seligman,
57 Rue Saint-Dominique,
Paris.

Dear Mr. Seligman:

As I wired you, I am most delighted that you could manage to let us have the Holbein for $15,000. Everybody is pleased that we have such a wonderful picture here, but for the time being I can not publish anything about it, since the money has been advanced by our Arts Commissioners, and I have now to find someone who will present the picture. This does not mean, however, that the money would not be available at any time if you want it. In any case, I think it would be well if you would let us have a bill for it.

I received your letter regarding the Cassone, which is indeed a most beautiful piece of the finest type of Renaissance chests. I congratulate you upon its acquisition. I have written my opinion on the back of the photograph, but I could not quite make out from your letter whether you really want to have a written statement, so just use it or not, as you like. I am returning the photograph.

When I was in Paris, M. René told me that I had forgotten to endorse the photograph of the painting by Bol. If this is so, I shall be glad to endorse it, but I do not remember whether this is the portrait of the girl, of 1642, and for the moment I have mislaid the photograph of it. I thought I had given my opinion about it, but if I did not, let me know and I will hunt for the photograph.

Yours very sincerely,

W.R. Valentiner

Handwritten part still needs transcribing - yes and definitely without putting [[handwritten]] or handwritten ends in the transcription box - where does this nonsense always come from ?
