QUESTIONNAIRE

Q. What is the Detroit Museum of Art Founders Society?
A. It is the old corporation of the Detroit Museum of Art which founded the Museum.

Q. When was the Detroit Museum of Art founded?
A. March 25, 1885.

Q. How was it founded?
A. By 40 members of the corporation who contributed the sum of $1,000 each, supplemented by thousands of public pledges of smaller amounts. This financed the original building of the Detroit Museum of Art on Jefferson Avenue.

Q. Give a brief resume of the accomplishments of the Detroit Museum of Art.
A. For 35 years prior to 1919, the Detroit Museum of Art carried forward the art burden of the City of Detroit and many men and women in that organization worked unselfishly for the upbuilding of the collections, accumulating art treasures conservatively valued at $1,000,000. They also acquired the property where our new museum now stands, worth about $2,000,000.

Q. When did their administration of the museum cease?
A. In 1919 the new charter of the City of Detroit provided for a municipal department of arts to be governed by the Arts Commission, and under the liberal provisions of this act, the Detroit Museum of Art turned over the substantial resources of their labor of love to be administered by the Detroit Institute of Arts.

Q. Was the old corporation of the Detroit Museum of Art continued?
A. It was continued as the Detroit Museum of Art Founders Society.
