Dear Mrs. Parker:

I have been working on my father, who is Chairman of the Finance Committee, to see if there would be any basis on which we could acquire the crucifix. Today at lunch when he was in an especially good mood, Mr. Johnson, our business manager, and I went after him, and he finally agreed to let us buy the crucifix if we can get it on the following basis:

We will send you a check for $3,000 January 1 (or we can date it December 30 if you would prefer to have it on this year's books). Beginning with February, we will send you a check for $1,000 the first of each month during 1957 except during the months of July and August. This will make a total of $12,000. We skip July and August because during the summertime we have no income from tuition, fees, and room and board.

Two or three years ago when we first discussed the possibility of acquiring the crucifix, I asked you if you would consider taking less than $15,000, and I remember Mr. Seligmann said at that time that when I was in a position to make him a firm offer, he would consider it.

I hope that you can persuade Mr. Seligmann to let us have the crucifix on the basis on which I am suggesting. You can have no idea how much finagling and psychology it took for me to work this. My dad is sympathetic to our efforts where the art gallery is concerned, but he feels that we have invested enough money there, and his conscience sort of hurts him at the thought of typing up more funds. As I explained to you, we are pretty well committed on our budget for the decorating and furnishing of the new gallery.
