Dear Mr. Seligman,

It is very good of you to have sent the colour transparency of the crozier head that you mentioned to me. It is, of course, earlier than the crozier heads I showed you here, and seems to date from the end of the twelfth century. This at all events is the dating proposed by Cott (Siculo-Arabic Ivories, Princeton, 1939, No. 157) for a comparable crozier head from the Hoentschel Collection in the Metropolitan Museum. A not dissimilar crozier head in the treasury at Hildesheim is also assigned by Cott to the twelfth century. I am returning the colour transparency under separate cover.

Yours sincerely,
J. W. Pope-Hennessy
